AMD Radeon R9 295X2 graphics card

Advanced Micro Devices on Tuesday lifted the curtain on the Radeon R9 295X2, the beefiest consumer GPU in the chipmaker's stable and "the world's fastest and most powerful graphics card," by AMD's telling.

The Radeon R9 295X2, developed jointly with liquid cooling specialist Asetek, joins AMD's first few Graphics Core Next (GCN)-based Radeon R9 graphics processors released over the past several months, including the initial Radeon R9 release, the Radeon R9 290X, as well as the Radeon R9 270X and R9 280X.

The new issue, which will be available later this month for a whopping $1,499, combines two Radeon R9 Series GPUs to "manhandle today's and tomorrow's games in maximum settings at 4K resolution," AMD said.

"AMD is thrilled to launch the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 graphics card, built on the same award-winning Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture that powers the gaming industry. This record-shattering dual-GPU card will enable industry-leading audio and visually stunning 4K gaming, proving once again that Radeon is gaming," Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager of AMD's Graphics Business Unit, said in a statement.

With its muscular design and expensive price tag, the Radeon R9 295X2 is clearly an ultra-enthusiast graphics card, built for PC gamers who must have the best available hardware inside their rigs. Formerly code named Project Hydra, the 295X2 boasts 12.4 billion transistors and 5,632 stream processors spread across its two GPUs, and delivers compute power on the order of 11.5 TeraFLOPs, AMD said.

The card's engine clock can be cranked as high as 1018MHz, and the 295X2 has 8GB of GDDR5 memory shared via a dual 512-bit memory bus and boasting 5.0 Gbps memory speed. There are 352 texture units capable of a texture fill-rate of up to 358.3 GT/s, 128 ROPs delivering a pixel fill-rate of up to 130.3 GP/s, and an advanced Z-Stencil buffer to aid real-time rendering. The Radeon R9 295X2 supports PCI-E 3.0, DirectX 11.2, and AMD's own Mantle graphics API for boosting visual computing performance.

Oh, and this card sucks in a crazy 500 watts of juice in typical configurations. Such a powerful, energy-gobbling discrete desktop GPU runs pretty hot, of course, so AMD and Asetek have designed an elaborate, two-pronged cooling system for the Radeon R9 295X2.

The card has an illuminated, active cooling fan built into its case to chill the board's RAM and regulators. Custom, micro-channel liquid cooling units by Asetek are included in the card itself to keep the twin GPUs from overheating, while an external 120mm radiator and fan unit chills the liquid cycled through to the in-card cooling units via sealed tubes.

The Radeon R9 295X2 is the kind of graphics card gamers are going to want to show off instead of tucking away inside a featureless desktop tower. One of the first enthusiast PC makers stepping up to include the card in a new system is Maingear, which said it will be delivering a Radeon R9 295X2-based rig as part of its Epic line of products.

Thanks but I would have to take out a second mortgage to pay for that and it probably won't fit in my case. :kez_15:

It does look like a nice card but for me it a bit of an overkill.
