  • Tutorial How-To Universal Theme Patcher...

This is a discussion about "Universal Theme Patcher". What it does and how to use it.
    -----
By default, Windows does not allow 3rd party themes to be installed and run because of a certificate protection system built into the uxtheme.dll file. So we need to "Patch" our system files and bypass the certificate verification to be able to run custom themes..
    -----
Universal Theme Patcher is the best tool to use. Works on both 32bit & 64 bit systems. It is a portable application, which means Universal Theme Patcher does not require installation. Operates in normal mode, no need to enter safe mode. You can run program with argument "-silent" to patch in silent mode. And also will run from a USB drive.
    -----
Universal Theme Patcher and complete detailed instructions can be downloaded here in this thread..
    -----
If you try to install and run a custom theme without patching your system, and without running Theme Resource Changer you will notice right away that the taskbar, Explorer windows, Start menu and much more will still look like the default basic theme without aero.

Now take a look at screen shot 'After_Patching' which shows the same custom theme 'ICS Red'.

    Information
When you have patched the first 3 files you will be asked to restart your system.
For 32bit (x86) types, click the 'Yes' button to restart when you see the notice.

32bit (x86) types, can click the 'Yes' button and your computer will automatically restart now.
64bit (x64) types, can click the 'No' button to stop the automatic restart, then close out the app window manually.
64bit users continue with the 'IMPORTANT' note below to patch 2 more files.

    Information
    **** IMPORTANT - FOR 64bit USERS ONLY ****
If you have a 64bit Windows, you need to patch 2 extra copies of files for a total of 5 files.

    9) For 64 bit users only, now right click 'UniversalThemePatcher-x86.exe' and select 'Run as Administrator'.
The language dialog window will pop up again.
Press 'OK' for English or choose a language from the drop down menu then click 'OK'.
The 'Universal Theme Patcher Report' window will also pop up again.
Press 'Yes' to begin patching your last 2 files (x86) in the SysWOW64 folder.

When the x86 (32bit) patcher begins, you will notice that the top file is grayed out completely.
The SysWOW64 folder does not contain a copy of 'themeservice.dll', and it will only allow you to patch the bottom 2 files.
    Reference screen '64bit_Patch_Buttons'.
    10_64bit_Patch_Buttons.jpg

    10) Again as you click the last 2 patch buttons you should see a 'Patch Success' confirmation with an 'OK' button.
And as you click each 'OK' button you will notice that each 'Patch' button becomes grayed out and the restore button becomes active.
    Reference screen '64bit_Patch_Success'.
    11_64bit_Patch_Success.jpg

Close the installer, then re-start your machine manually. The installer will not prompt you to restart after running this second time.

    11) As each file was patched a back up of the original was created immediately and placed in the original folder location.
The backed file will have the word "backup" added to the end of the file name.
    - If you are running the x86 (32bit Systems) version installer, the 3 files that are patched and backed up in the System32 folder are as follows:
    themeservice.dll
    themeui.dll
    uxtheme.dll

    - If you are running the x64 (64bit Systems) version installer, it will patch the same 3 files in the System32 folder. Plus when you run the x86 (32bit) patcher there are 2 more files that are patched and backed up in the SysWOW64 folder are as follows:
    themeui.dll
    uxtheme.dll
    Reference screen 'Backups'.
    12_Backups.jpg

    12) You should be patched and ready to start running custom themes..
You can go back and turn on the User account control at any time now.

    13) Once you are patched, there is no need to run this again unless Microsoft releases new updates in the future that requires a re-patch, or if you re-install your operating system.

    14) If you decide to restore any of the original System files in the future you just simply run the app once more and click on each of the restore buttons.
If you originally ran both versions of the app to patch on 64 bit systems, be sure to run both versions of the app again to restore.

After you have restored the original files, the patcher will not prompt you to re-start. You have to manually re-start your system for the changes to take place.

    Information
    ****** IMPORTANT ******
If you installed a custom theme BEFORE running this patcher, or any other patcher, the custom theme may not appear correctly.
If your custom theme is not appearing correctly, go to your Personalization applet and select your custom theme again.

If you are still experiencing a problem with your custom theme appearing correctly,
from the personalization applet look for the header named 'Aero Themes' and select one of the themes that is listed there.
Log off or restart. Then try selecting your custom theme once again.
    Reference screen 'Stock_Aero_Themes'.

Very informative, used this a few times with 64-bit OS and never knew you had to patch the 32-bit files as well. Might explain a few things being displayed weirdly lol
